Today, there are smart devices in your pocket, on your wrist, next to your front door and on the wall of your living room. But making things smarter and more connected is not unique to companies that manufacture products for consumers. Industrial and commercial equipment providers are just as driven and motivated to make their devices smarter, and they’re increasingly hearing demands from their customers to make their equipment more connected.
As we’ve discussed in previous posts on the Modern Equipment Manufacturer, individual components and devices are a thing of the past. Today, equipment owners, building owners and facility managers want devices that operate as systems. And they want those systems to be capable of being managed and controlled from a single point – effectively creating a system of systems that seamlessly integrate for ease in management and control.
Many of these new, smarter and more connected devices were on display earlier this year at the annual AHR Conference, which featured some of the latest in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technologies. What we found at AHR was an industry increasingly network and cloud-enabling their equipment and working to utilize that functionality to introduce services and other offerings to their customers.
We recently had an opportunity to sit down with Kyle Delpiano, a Business Development Manager at one of the companies that showcased new, smarter solutions at this year’s AHR, Bell & Gossett, to talk about this revolution in the industry and the movement towards smarter devices. Here is what he had to say:
Modern Equipment Manufacturer (MEM): Can you tell my readers a little bit about Bell & Gossett? What kinds of products does the company make?
Kyle Delpiano: Bell & Gossett is a world-leading manufacturer of energy efficient solutions in the commercial HVAC and plumbing industry. Bell & Gossett offers a complete range of energy efficient pumps, boosters, drives, valves, heat exchangers, controllers and water systems for numerous applications in the building services and general industrial markets.
MEM: What types of markets/industries does Bell & Gossett sell its products to? Where would our readers find Bell & Gossett solutions?
Kyle Delpiano: Bell & Gossett produces pump products and delivers energy efficient Hydronic HVAC and plumbing systems for healthcare, schools, universities, multi-family residential, commercial and industrial applications.
Bell & Gossett solutions are installed in iconic buildings around the United States, where innovation and efficiency are highly prized – from multi-use high rises like the Wilshire Grand Center in Los Angeles to professional sports stadiums like U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis and Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
MEM: We’re seeing an increasing demand for smart and connected devices in the HVACR industry. What steps – if any – is Bell & Gossett taking to make its products smarter?
Kyle Delpiano: For Bell & Gossett, “smart,” means offering state-of-the-art technology as well as energy efficient solutions. We are always working toward improving our product lines to give our customers industry-leading, powerful and reliable products for smart HVAC applications.
The Bell & Gossett PPS Parallel Pump System is one example within our smart product offerings and features an innovative pump controller (can use both sensored or sensorless input) that can be optimized for greater system and energy efficiency.
Sensorless pump controllers use speed, torque and power data to know where the pump operates on the curve and react based on those factors to operate at the correct speed. In turn, that information can be used to monitor pump performance and optimize energy usage to match system demands.
MEM: Bell & Gossett had some exciting new products on display at AHR earlier this year. Can you tell our readers about them?
Kyle Delpiano: Bell & Gossett was excited to launch our new line of Series e-HSC double suction centrifugal pumps at the 2019 AHR Expo. The new pump series provides engineers, contractors and building owners with a more powerful, serviceable and efficient solution for a wide range of critical HVAC applications.
The Series e-HSC is suitable for commercial buildings such as hospitals, shopping centers and malls, hotels and resorts, sports arenas, office buildings and airports for systems that require chillers, cooling towers, distributive pumping, district heating and cooling, primary and secondary pumping or process application.
